One month later...

  • Mar. 23rd, 2009 at 11:04 PM

As I went to write this news post I had to double check... has it really been an entire month since I posted a comic? Yep it has. Hah, didn't take me long to fall off the wagon, did it?! Well, as it sometimes does, life interfered. This comic mostly sums up what I've been doing, though I think I probably downplay the stressing I've been doing. But enough of that, it's time for comics! I've got a Kate Beaton-esque comic lined up next and some others in the works.

You know, you might think that people not laughing at the dumb jokes I make would cause me to stop making them, but then you'd be wrong. :)

I won't have a comic Wednesday, but I do have a funny picture. I'll explain when it's posted.

I reeeeeeally enjoy Constantine, Supernatural, Hellblazer and pretty much any neat biblical good v. evil stories. And ever since I saw Constantine with the holy brass knuckles I've thought it would be cool to have a cross ring so that I'd have a "holy right hook" as it were :D

On that note, if anyone has any recommendations of shows, movies, comics, or books of that ilk, let me know. I'm always looking to devour more :)

Fable II

  • Feb. 11th, 2009 at 9:54 PM

Woooo Fable II! I like games where the environment actively reacts to you based on your previous actions and this one definitely does that. Currently I'm "good" and "pure" though I keep accidentally casting fireballs in town and people seem to get pretty scared about that :).

If you look closely in the first frame you'll see my dog passed out on the couch next to me. She's a good pal.

Trauma Center

  • Feb. 10th, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Heh, Trauma Center was such a fun game :). This comic is very scribbled and you can totally see a flowchart in the background (I reuse and recycle lol).

I'm going to probably be uploading my comics at night from now on, since that's when I have more time to do it. Since this one is a day late though I'll have a new one tomorrow. It's about Fable II which I've been playing and enjoying a lot lately.

I might have a comic Friday too, we'll see.

Like Allan

  • Feb. 5th, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Here we go! A comic in someone else's style! This is, as the title states, like Allan, which I just started reading a couple weeks ago. He's a highschool kid drawing dailies that are both funny and thoughtful without being too hard to "pick up" like I feel some web comics can be.

I may or may not have a watercolor for Monday. I have a few different comics I've been working on and I'm not sure which one I want post yet. Have a good weekend!

This is the continuation of my previous Harry Potter-ish comic. And really, who doesn't love snow cones (or "shaved ice" if you were born before 1900)?

I made a few new attempts in this... painting a background which came out "ok" in frame one with the exception of that uh, "branch". I'm pretty happy with the fire and sepia toned clouds in frame three, and then a b/w cobblestone street in frame four. I'd like to get the backgrounds in these looking pretty good, but understated so that the focus continues to be on the characters.

On another note, I think I'm going to start drawing some "guest comics" for my own comic. That is to say, try drawing a history comic like Kate Beaton, or a daily comic like Jay's. It might be a week or two before I start posting them, but I have some great ideas. :)

I think I'm going to use lined paper more often for my quick drawings. I like that way it looks scanned in.
Next Mondays comic is going to be the sequel to the Harry Potter comic I drew a while ago.

A couple weeks ago I had this crazy dream. It was kind of like the nightmares I used to have when I was a kid where ghosts, monsters, zombies, and other various horrible things would take turns dismembering me, except at the part of the dream when I was no longer hiding, when the thing that was searching for me found me, rather than simply dispair, I hollered back in rage. It was this giant face in the sky, I don't think it was God, but something not God, and it was bellowing at me and shaking my house. I looked back and roared and thought to myself, "I'm not going out without a fight".

Today's comic is a little late, but so far I've kept on schedule to the day. I've already got a scribbled comic for Wednesday and I'm working on pencilling the comic for next Monday right now.

Left 4 Dead

  • Jan. 21st, 2009 at 3:57 PM

I'm sure that poor ol' Boomer's enormous neck goiter and insatiable hunger for human brains don't help his quest for friends either, but the projectile vomiting would be at the top of my list.

If you like video games and/or Zombie movies you really owe it to yourself to try Left 4 Dead. The zombie mode is honestly one of the craziest things I've ever experienced in a video game. I can't urge you enough.

Be nice!

I like making fun of my wife. She doesn't like it, but when she gets mad it's really funny so I do it more

She doesn't like that either :)

Not much else to say about that. This is my second water color and so far my best (3rd is worse, 4th is ok). I need to practice so I can consistently produce flesh tones like this.

I'm already done with Thursdays comic and I like it so much I'll probably post it Wednesday. It's about video games and I think it's funny :)

Baby names :)

  • Jan. 14th, 2009 at 8:32 PM

This comic came from a real conversation I had with a pregnant coworker. Not that she was trying to name him Hooshlag, but I was just advising her to be careful what she names her kid lest he be made fun of mercilessly once he/she enters grade school. I, being named Mat, am an expert on the subject of things that rhyme with names.

I know my kids will appreciate my thoughtfulness.

Oh, also, I like how I drew a better face to the side of my original one. I do that often.

Posting early!

  • Jan. 11th, 2009 at 8:33 PM

This is actually the first comic I painted in watercolor, which looking at it now, I feel is pretty obvious. Lots of bleeds, the color is only ok, but whatever... I'm learning and it's fun. :)

For xbox360 owners, the red ring is a real, palpable experience. When it happens, you're out for at least a month, maybe two. I was lucky and mine was only gone for a month, but man it sucked.

I bought Left 4 Dead yesterday and it's a lot of fun. If anyone is down for some coop, or wants to play another game (I have most big ones) hit me up at matsayswhat. Watch for another b/w pen drawing on Wednesday or Thursday! I think it's a pretty funny one :)

Mat wants a wife

  • Jan. 8th, 2009 at 8:47 PM

In keeping with my plan to draw more comics and actually post them, here is a quick one.

My wife likes reality shows, and not that long ago she was watching one called Farmer Wants a Wife. To say that I have contempt for these shows is probably accurate, but this one was particularily ludicrous... A whole bunch of women competing to marry some regular old dude. Falling over themselves even. Being a newly wed I of course that this was an AWESOME idea and regretted having not vetted my own wife in a similar fashion. In my head I picture the finale coming down to an obstacle course... mud, tires, belly crawl, wall jump, monkey bars... the WORKS! How else can I know her love is real? LOL. (Love you Aja ;-*)

New Years

  • Jan. 5th, 2009 at 11:09 AM

It's been a while since I've updated. It would be fair to compare me to kittybot, VG cats, or the Perry Bible Fellowship :).

For those of you that have followed my personal journal, you might have seen a post a few months ago where I mentioned I've still been drawing, and that instead of converting my comics to digital form, I was going to just scan them in off of paper. Kate Beaton, Anders and Maria, and Jay Marcy are really to thank for that, since I think their comics look great and would like to emulate that paper-y feel of them.

So yeah, I painted this in watercolor, and considering that it's only the third time that I've used watercolor since I was in grade school (the other two times being comics I'll post in the coming days/weeks), I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Obviously I'm not great at controlling the bleeding, and I need to get better at scanning, especially since the paper I'm using has a texture to it.

In closing, I think that this video should be required viewing of all women before they are allowed to be married. It is highly accurate. At least, in my case it is.

This certainly isn't my greatest comic artistically (ugh, bad hands :( ), but it's certainly one of my best in execution.

I could say that it's all in-jokes, but really I just have a tendancy to blurt out nonsensical stream of concious words.

I'm still in a daze since this just happened a few hours ago (and I gave her this preprepared comic).

Oh yeah and she said yes :)

I'm pretty sure none of this makes sense.

That's right, I share quite the infamous last name with the villain from Harry Potter!! oooOOOO! And I use it to scare little kids! OOOOOOOOOoooooOOOO! And I can make a silly anagram with my name just like Tom can in the book!

Speaking of which... I never thought about it until I was drawing my comic, but isn't it convenient that his name is Tom and not Thomas? That h, a, and s would have screwed it all up. I for one am not intimidated at all by the name Lord Voldehasmort

The 5th Harry Potter movie was excellent (imo), especially the casting of Luna Lovegood. Between the movie and the book, I almost didn't get this comic done!

I can understand how people like the iPod and the Zune, but when you're as nerdy as I am, they just don't work.

As I finished coloring this comic, I couldn't help but think that it would have definitely looked better with the frame style I used last week. Ah, well, I had already started it and it would have been a pain to change.

That's right, a Gay Bomb.

I'm pretty happy with how this strip came out. The coloring and background depth on the first two frames could have been a little bit better in retrospect. I think that I was maybe just so excited about coloring the last frame that I didn't spend as much time as I could have on them. :). I think I'm going to start trying to frame my comics a little more exact. I had been just using an "ok" template I made, but using perfect 250 pixel squares looks better (in my opinion).

Next weeks strip will be in the old template though, since I started it a while ago.

This is another self proclaimed classic that I drew a while ago, but have cleaned up so that I'm happier with it. While not quite as poignant now as when I originally drew it, I still enjoy the idea of major deities having a laugh, or maybe even a larf because of how silly we humans can be.

I finished drawing Monday's strip last night and only need to ink it. I'm really happy with how it came out, mostly because it involves a funny weiner joke. :)
